Who controls the identification systems will make rules to the ecosystems

I was interviewed to the radio yesterday and there was a discussion about media studies. There has been always studies about how important the internet, magazines, news papers, radio etc. are. So if you think critically about that, so when you are talking about television you are talking about a TV-device. However, same way you are watching videos from internet. So that is a little bit old fashion way to think. So my thought was that maybe you should think what kind of ecosystems there is.

We have the Facebook’s ecosystem. It is substantial because it will be also an economical ecosystem via Facebook credits. I don’t know what they are going to do with the credits, however you could think that in the same way as Facebook has opened user information to the third parties through Facebook Connect. So I can take your information and offer some kind of service. I can imagine that in same way Facebook Credits will be a payment system that can be related to some other things than gaming.

Microsoft’s ecosystem can be used to buy Microsoft points. Traditionally you have been able to buy multiplayer time or Microsoft Live service. But now you can also rent movies and buy different things with the points.

Third major ecosystem is a Google and also YouTube. I noticed a story about a week ago about that Google went to the Hollywood and ordered exclusive content from producers to YouTube. It is extremely interesting when you relate it to the Finnish or Swedish TV-company that would go to talk with the Hollywood production company and trying to buy good content. When Google goes there, they have funds that are totally different. Then from the Google’s and YouTube’s business point of view it is interesting issue why they would use middlemen’s when they could expand their business when they have alle the users and login systems. And then you add the payments systems to this, so the ecosystems will affect what you will be watching and from where.

It is one interesting media trend, when we are talking about that audiences and offerings are fragmenting. In other level it is also focusing to the ecosystems. And related to the print media Amazon is a very major player. This is a very strong development path. So it reflects to the communities. Communities control the identifications. So you can login with Google’s or Facebook’s user name to the different services. But this leads to that that who controls the identification systems will also make the rules to the ecosystems. From Finnish point of view it is quite sad that we are not involved to this game. Off course you can use the systems and they are great to the small operators. Still big ones make the rules.
